Intelligent Frivoloty Turns Out To Be Creative and Useful, Afterall

anna Wintour Said, "If you look at any great fashion photograph out of context, it will tell you just as much about what's going on in the world as a headline in The New York Times."

Interesting when you look at John Galliano's 2011 Spring Fashion debut for mensware. Male models stomp down the runway as Charlie Chaplins. A Depression has most definitely clouded the fashion industry, if only over the bank accounts of upscale bouquties and couture dress shops. Kelly Cutrone said "I got into fashion in the 90's because fashion was the new Rock N' Roll." She went on to explain that this was no longer the case. Fashion has been hurting for the past 5 years. Why not lament the loss in style?

Things to Look Forward to In the Great Month of September

I love September. I love the word itself. I love what it represents. If you know me, you probably know that I get overly sentimental about the holidays, and overly expressive and participatory when it comes to fall and winter celebrations. In lieu of these facts, I decided to write about exciting events that take place in September...things we can all look forward too. Yes, "we".

September hosts Labor Day..You know what that means? 3 day weekend. Celebrate.

September 9 through the 16, New York Fashion week.

September 16, the great state fair

The September issue of Vogue Magazine

September being one month closer to Halloween, and spiced drinks

Semptember: the arrival of temperate, bareable weather
September birthdays :I know about 5 people who share a birthday in September? Whats the deal?
Yeah, thats all i've got. I love it.

Music. Beach House. Yeah.

Its nothing new that Beach House is awesome. Yeah, Beach House. Mhm.

Ox Blood Paints Fall Red

It's a couple of days until August. I have no air conditioning in my 2001 hail-damaged Saturn (as many of my friends know because I complain about it virtually every day). I'm dreaming of mid September and October when I can wear my leather, my blazers, tights with fabric shorts, and riding boots. Ahhh, classic.

I peeked Fall 2010 fashion, and I have highlighted some of my own favorite looks (Thanks refinery29.com)OX BLOOD. I was at work the other day, and found a deep red mini satchel that was, as my coworker Jenna informed me "ox blood." She was so right. I'm loving this color for fall. Can you go wrong with plumb and oxblood? Probably not.

CAMEL -- I think camel quite frankly never goes out of style. Its sophisticated, and warm. I love it in cashmere. I invested in a camel blazer from Banana Republic 2 years ago, and i'm so glad I did because its one of my favorite "essential pieces."

Winter's Crop Top -- If you were confused and unsettled by the reemergence of the crop top for summer, you can remain at unease for fall. I never quite got the hang of the crop top for summer, but I feel like cropped sweaters and sweater vests will be insanely cute with jeans and heals and long necklaces. I'm going to be on the hunt for this play on proportion.

NYFW also featured graffiti pants, and leather pleated skirts. I think both ideas are pretty amazing. I love the idea of a leather pleated skirt. It's like school girl gone rock and roll. I love plays on traditional ideas, like pairing something abrasive like a studded belt, with something soft and girly.

Military fashion -- i've been interested in this for the past 3 years is kind of old to me. They are mass producing it like crazy though. I think the civil war-inspired button up jacket can go real wrong real fast. (thanks fashionising.com)

Buttoned up-- collars are one of my favorite new looks. It's sort of 80's but modern at the same time? I like this with short, chained necklaces.

Things to do Before I Die

Dear Lord,

Please let me see the Knife and/or Fever Ray before I go into the great beyond. The Knife remain the most influential groups in the last 10 years, and they are under represented in the music world. I love.love.love this song (cover) and performance.

LOL Things.

This post has only comical merit.. pictures I think are funnee :)

Movies Movies

I went in thinking Inception was going to be a series of surreal dream sequences, that, when strung together, would tell a, complex, and mysterious story. That's what I thought. In reality, Inception has a very straight forward plot, and it makes a would-be confusing and abstract concept understandable to casual movie-goers. I think that shows the brilliance of director Christopher Nolan.
The costume design was mesmerizing, and reminiscent of something that draws inspiration from the 1950's, yet could be worn in the distant future due to the unusual color and fabric choice. Camel colored suits, deep browns, skinny ties, and three piece suits were accompanied with slicked back, perfectly prepared hair. The men in the movie appeared pristine.
Ellen Paige actually managed to not bother me, or remind me of Juno, so kudos to her.

The movie never gets into time period, appropriately enough, as most of it takes place suspended in time and space. Warfare takes place in the human mind, and as a landscape where anythign is possible it's a pretty ideal place for an action movie. The story coincides with a subconscious battle the main character played by Leonardo DiCaprio struggles with throughout. Two characters parallel each other with inner turmoil related to relationships, guilt, the inability to change the past, and ultimately the acceptance of reality. (analysis complete)
Inception is a Jerry Bruckheimer movie with a brain. Go see it.

Follow Up on MGMT Red Rocks in June

Ignore that this is over a month later...

First of all, I want to let every one know, if you are experiencing a show at Red Rocks ampitheatre, if you need to pick up your tickets at will call, do not, i repeat, do NOT mistakenly make the hike to the stage area to pick up your tickets. Will Call is at the bottom entrance, about 1/2 a mile away from the admission area. You will have to hike 15 minutes through the bushes, and take a short cut, and wind your way down the mountain to the very bottom, where you will have to stand in line for another 15 minutes, then have to treck back through the bushes and up the hill and refind the short cut, and yeah..It's not a pretty sight. I know this because thats what happened to me.

Tame Impala was the first band, and after our unexpected hike, we sat down just in time to see the last 30 seconds of the last song. It was comical. I think we were gone an entire hour.

I had no idea who the second act was. Cloaked figures rocking back and forth eruppted into song and revealed Janelle Monae, electro/soul/funk's latest gem. I had heard of her before, but never paid attention. I was so wrong to slight her!! Her live performance blew me away. The stage clothes reminded me of fever ray or the knife because they wore black cloaks and the masks with long noses (what are those called?). Three back up dancers wore this ensemble pretty much the entire show. The ominous looking stage presence juxtaposed the happy-go-lucky music in a really fantastic and bizarre way. It was, uh, what's the word? Edgy.

She covered Somewhere Over the Rainbow acapella as sprinkles started to fall. The temperature dropped drastically, and the clouds started to build over the mountain.

After that, the rain started to fall in more steady sheets. My dad, whom i went with, was nicely numbed by the boose he had been drinking while I was hiking! The freezing rain didnt seem to bother him much. The weather began getting uncomfortable, to say the least.

We waited, shivering, for MGMT to emerge, and by 10, it was about 46 degrees, I had sandals on, and little pellets of hail were dropping accompanied by now substantial rain.

I was starting to feel miserable.

My feet were numb. My hair was wet, My clothes were wet.

As my hair was being tossled in the wind and rain, I was beginning to think "This isnt worrrth ittt!"

MGMT got on stage, after what felt like 3 hours of waiting, and I stayed for about 3 songs. They sounded great, and it would have been a really great show, but..I was frozen, in inappropriate attire for the weather, and just wanted to go to sleep.

So....It was a bum deal, but an adventure at the same time in a weird way.

Antique Florals Make Summer New Again

I'm at work...and i'm not working ...It seems anytime I have things to do, I find the most inspiration to discuss something I have recently fallen in love with.

I also have been busy with finals, and an intercession class, so I just haven't had much creative juice.

Which brings me to today's muse: Fantasic, vintage floral skirts and dresses. Yeah, i know, big surprise, florals for summer and spring? What a concept. the difference this time, is that these prints are daintier and softer than usual, and make any girl look and feel girlier than ever before. They are seriously fun and flirty (excuse the cliche, but its true). I would pair these guys with a soft, flowey shirt, and add some edgy hardware to balance the softness of the skirt, with some strong accessories.

If You Haven't Heard

Wild Beasts. Wild Beasts. Wild Beasts.

That fantastically droney, languid , pop spectacular is Wild Beasts! I really don't know how to describe their sound, so I used languid because there is some kind of slow/lazy quality to their songs, without turning into Rainy Day music. It's just..oh, what's the word??? GOOD.
Their album came out in December, so this isn't intirely NEW music, but they haven't seem to have caught on yet. They are worth the attention. When I first heard "All the Kings Men," I just couldn't get enough because it was so different than anything I've ever heard. their sound is truly not a replication of what we hear every day.

The vocals and guitar sound are probably my favorite aspects of this band. --"WATCH MEH WATCH MEH!" Ummm just check it out. I've gone ga ga.

Music Similar: The Temper Trap. "Sweet Disposition." They have very similar vocal stylings, but break out into Coldplay-style harmonies mid song, and big finishes. It;s easy on the ears.

Oh look, its "All the Kings Men" video in the link below. How'd that get in here.. Album: Two Dancers.

Wild Beasts are on tour..uh, european tour. Damn...

New Music to Live By

I grew about as tired of hearing Electric Feel by MGMT as I did hearing the Drums by The Tings Tings last summer. The difference: The Ting Tings didn't just release a redeeming fantastic album, that will most definitely disappoint the casual listener, and club goer. No, this album is not as easy to swallow as those brainless pop hits that clog the club and radio sound waves. Can we put that shit to rest already?
MGMT's new album, Congratulations, is demonstrative of the bands non one trick ponyness, and is a fantastic surprise to you groaners at the meer mention of bands like MGMT. I was wonderfully surprised at the single, Flash Delirium which exudes a quirky, nod to 60's mod culture. Here, a link for your convienence : http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvSMp7T2Kes ..
The single doesn't stray too far from the path they have beaten, but still offers something different to those of you, like me, who easily grow wary of the summer fluff so amply offered.
Stay tuned, I'm going to see them in Red Rocks June 11th. I'm very excited to experience this album live....and..maybe hear the dreaded hits from last summer after a few of those delicious vodka lemonades that are so abundant on the side of that mountain in Denver.

Retire Your Raybans

Well, retire your raybans for the summer at least. Make room for the 50's vintage classic, Cat eye sunglasses for the pool, and beach. Now you can sport your cateye-eyeliner and sunglasses all at once. Whoa now. And maybe you can throw on your new cat-print tunic! No, don't do that. I'm kidding.

These glasses are cute, and look good on all face types. Target, and www.urbanoutfitters.com, can help you out in this chic and fun trend for the summer.

Don't Be So Catty

Yeah, I love cats. I don't see myself as one of those insane cat ladies, but I do cherish my cat, and think that generally, cats are funny and easier to take care of than dogs.

That being said, I noticed a recent flurry of my favorite pet being adorned on tank tops, racerbacks, and shorts. I thought it was some odd fluke or coincidence, however, Nylonmag.com confirms the meow meows are being spotted all over the nation in varoius upscale (and lowscale) boutiques and outlets.

Now, I would never wear a shirt with a big cat on it (I can say this because I almost purchased one from Urbanoutfitters.com, but decided I didn't want the stigma of being insane to follow me around), but I do think some of the prints out, like the one above, are quirky, cute, and humourous and are to be worn in moderation and...with caution.

But uh, ya secretly, I love it.
*Watch out for my feature on cat-eye sunglasses I saw featured on Marieclaire.com ..mee-ow..

If the Shoe Fits

It seems within the past 3 seasons or so, shoes have taken on an unfathomable, unrecognizable form. I first noticed this last fall, when Galliano featured insanely amazing HIGH heels made of wood and leather. The above shoe is Galliano. He blows my mind every season.
Louboutin has always created outlandish heels, platforms, and spiked boots, but as of late, the actual form of the high heel has been recreated in an exciting, futureistic, mechanical form that keeps me interested and amazed. In addition to beautiful clothing, designers have recreated and reimagined what the heel IS and where it GOES. Amazingly, I've seen the heel of the shoe placed at the arch of the foot, leaving the ball of a one's foot suspended in mid air. It's so strange and delightful.
On the modern runway, what's on the foot is just as awe-inspiring as the beautiful gowns on the body.

Lemons and Your Liver

I do a lot of health-related reading, and stumbled upon a good piece of advice not too long ago.
I'm a casual drinker. By casual, I mean, I'm very causal when I drink weekly. As a health enthusiast, I've started to worry about the effects this is going to have on my body.

According to this one lady, she said that keeping lemons handy is a good thing for all of you casual drinkers. Drink a glass of water in the morning with a sliced lemon in it. Now, you're probably not going to want to slice a lemon at 10:00 AM after going out all night, as the world spins around you, so precslice it for easy access. Your liver and immune system will thank you.

Microwavable Food I Can Stand By

A revamped Veggie Patty by Morning Star has really made me feel good about life. I generally eat nonprocessed, whole, wonderful, fresh foods, that have a a great deal of nutritional merit, while watching my daily calories.

Eating, therefore, you can imagine, can be difficult when it comes to going out or heading over to the very uncomfortably cold freezer section of the market. I was looking for Bocca Burgers, when I realized that My Neighborhood market, I guess, stopped carrying the brand. It was Morning Star galore in the misappropriated BREAKFAST area. So I snagged the Veggie Patty, cooked it, along with lightly steamed broccoli and carrots, with a tbsp. of hummus on the side. It was delicious. Truly satisfying.

The exciting thing about this patty is that you can actually SEE the vegetables. You see onions, water chesnuts, and carrots. Its not just an amalgomation of green flecks lost in a sea of brown mush.

No, I would reccommend this new burger. 110 calories per burger. Its worth it. Do it. I'm on the Morining Star Train. Sorry, Bocca.

AVERT YOUR EYES!! If You Like Dumb Stuff..'Cause This is not That

This is the art work of my friend Scott Henderson, an Oklahoma City artiste. Since I've devoted myself to knowing about interesting, worthwhile events that enrich our great city, I would suggest attending his art show tonight at Istvan Gallery tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Scott specializes in multi media productions that becon you to come closer and look at the surreal, and wonderful realities he creates in his art work. Go to this. Support a wonderful guy, and wonderful artist in OKC.
Ya, so its short notice. I just started this thing today. And even if no one is reading this, that's okay, I'm happy to spread the cheer about Scott's work! keep an eye out.

Procrastination Station - What to do when one must study for final exams..Create a blog

Its Friday afternoon. I took the day off to study for my semi-difficult finals (on a scale of 1 to 10, they are all like a 5.6 to a 7). What do I do when I have been forced to sit down, look at material I have already been tested over, while Wife Swap plays in the other room? I start a blog. Summer is upon me, and I feel like its an ideal time to embark on this strange frontier. I wonder if this was inspired by watching Julie and Julia three times last week? Which is a movie I would reccommend, by the way. This is among one of the many topics I will be talking about in said new blog. Continue reading...

Here's what I hope to entice you with: Nutrition, Food, healthy places to dine, living on a dime, school, night life, movies, music, things-I- care about -that- I- think -you- should -care -about- because- they- are-just -too- cool -not to. Events, and exercise.

My life has done a lot of changing, oh, within the past 365 days or so, and with this change, has come so many wonderful new discoveries and people. Life is good. Let's talk about it.

I would like to end by publishing my first opinion on this blog of mine, that I've named "On the Beam" which, according to thesaurus.com, means "hip" and "in the know." Okay, here it goes:
Pirate Radio: Dont See.
Julie and Julia: Go see.
